The village of Saillans would take its name from the Latin selhans, which means protrusion, or from the French saillans which means height.

Traces of occupation of the site dating from the Neolithic era were found at the localities Peychez and La Vieille Cure. In Gallo-Roman times, a communication route was established linking Fronsac to Coutras, on which the town was located.

The first village was located at a place called "Port de Saillans".
