This incredible natural phenomenon intrigues, questions and sometimes even fascinates. Here we reveal some of its secrets…

  • What is the Mascaret?  🌊

It is a natural phenomenon that occurs on certain estuaries. When the tide goes up the course of a river, it collides with the descending waters, this creates waves, waves and presto, the tidal bore is formed.

  • Where can we see this phenomenon?  😎

The tide goes up the Gironde estuary, then the Garonne river as well as the Dordogne. In the Fronsadais, you can observe the Tidal bore at Asques from the place du…Mascaret

  • Where does this name come from ? (I.e.

According to legend, the Mascaret comes from the name of a Girondin village, located at the point where the phenomenon occurs furthest upstream on the river: Saint Macaire, quite simply.

  • When can we observe it?  👀 📆

Between June and October, it is the good season to see the Tidal bore in Gironde, on the Dordogne and the Garonne. The wave is formed thanks to large tidal coefficients: the greater it is, the more imposing the wave will be. There are two tidal bores per day, or more than 730 per year, but only around fifty are truly remarkable when the tide coefficients are greater than 90. Do not hesitate to download the passage times at Asques.

  • Can we surf this wave? ????

Of course ! And the advantage is that there is no need to row for hours to surf. Surfing, kayaking, paddle, longboard, canoes and even jetski come and try the experience.

  • Numbers ?  (I.e.

The tidal bore moves at a speed of 15 to 30 km/h depending on the location. The wave can reach 2,5m. A hell of a wave that you can surf for 10 minutes (for the most talented of course)!

  • Any precautions to take?  ❗️

Friends spectators, place yourself in height and not along the banks. Indeed, the rising waters may surprise you. In addition, debris can be carried by the tide, be careful.

You will find the passage times of the Tidal Bore in Asques and Saint Pardon for download ⏰.
