Numerous remains found at the place called Pommiers and around the church attest to a human presence on the site of the current town from the Neolithic era. The seigneury of Pommiers is in the Middle Ages in the hands of the Vicomte de Fronsac. In 1961, the Foundries and Ateliers du Bélier were created by the mayor of the municipality, employing 400 employees. Vérac has a large college open since 1985 which welcomes students from surrounding communities.
