Lugon would take its name from Lug, Celtic god. Or Lucus, meaning woods and forests, whose “c” would have changed into “g” over time. The origin of the name Ile du Carney is unclear, although topographically indisputable, the island being formerly separated from the land by a backwater of the Dordogne; on the other hand, the name of Carney from the Occitan “carne” leaves deep historical doubts… The two parishes were joined in 1806.
According to some, the first traces of occupation of the site do not predate the Gallo-Roman period. Indeed, the town is made up of palus, lowlands and swamps which are not really hospitable. For others, the territory of the commune seems to be continuously inhabited since prehistoric times, the configuration of the land, the important hillsides, the palus bordering the river and the river itself making the country safe.

In the past, the inhabitants often traveled by water, a guarantee of safety. Barges, barges, and other flat-bottomed boats were used in the palus where each house had its hold and during floods. The width of the Dordogne reaches 800m in front of the Grande Chapelle.

Until before the Revolution of 1789, the boats were quarent in the port of Lugon, before arriving on Libourne. Foreign ships stopped at the time of the early crops to load the white wines from Fronsadais.

The village is structured around the XNUMXth century thanks to a priory created by the abbey of Guîtres. The highlands have long served as hunting and farming grounds for neighboring villages.

Today, the main activity is viticulture.
