A picturesque village

Listed in the inventory of picturesque sites in the Gironde, Asques is a charming little village. Located at the end of a limestone plateau, overlooking a meander of the Dordogne, it takes its name from the Latin aqua (water) or from the French asquette (shelter in the rock).

From the XNUMXth century, benefiting from the drying up of the marshes and the development of river navigation, the river became a source of wealth and a place of trade for products from the hinterland. The port of Asques is enriched and provides a living for many craftsmen and traders.

River activity gradually declined after the 1870s. Today, it attracts boaters and the curious coming to observe the tidal bore, and in summer, the port returns to the liveliness of the days of the barges.

The tidal bore, a unique and surprising phenomenon

The quesako tidal bore?

Linked to the tidal coefficient, the Tidal Bore is a wave that forms as a result of the clash of two opposing currents: the rising tide of the ocean on one side and the downward current of the river on the other. A wave is then created and goes up the estuary of the Gironde then the Dordogne and the Garonne: the wave of the Tidal bore.

You have to pay attention to the times and the tidal coefficients, because if it occurs twice a day, the tidal bore is only "surfable" about fifty times a year when the tidal coefficient exceeds 90 .
