🎉 This festive event was launched in France in 1982 by Maurice Fleuret, director of music and dance, on a brilliant idea from Jack Lang, then Minister of Culture. The desire for a major popular festival around music 🎶 was born from the observation that paid concerts are often reserved for an elite 💰.
The celebration quickly spread across Europe 🌍, starting in Belgium in 1984, then marking a European Year of Music in 1985 🎼 with Athens, the first European Capital of Culture that year, being chosen to kick off the Europeanization of the event.
